What? You have a SATURN rocker cover? And you'll trade it for the anonymous, boring, American version?
Deal.
I have two 1976 and one 1977. The part numbers are different but I don't know the difference. Do you have a preference?

How did you come out on your heater control valve problem? I still have a valve boxed up and ready to go.

I never got it fixed. Guess I need to buy that one from you.

As for the valve cover. I don't know the difference. Maybe someone will chime in that knows. I'd think as long as it's for a chain drive it would work.

I should be able to examine and retrieve my 1976 and 1977 chain rocker covers this weekend.
Based on the illustrated parts breakdown, I expect the only difference to be the vacuum nipple that protrudes sideways on the intake side.
Probably one year the nipple is straight, the other is angled, something like that. Should be inconsequential.

I'll throw the heater control valve in as part of the deal.
It's not pretty, but it's better than it looks and should work fine.

Um, yes, I do want Saturn rocker covers. One, anyway. Don't I?
Are you concerned that once I have one I will only want more, that this dalliance will inexorably lead to a spiral of addiction and self-destructive hoarding? I can stop with just one, really. One Saturn cover, that is. Astron, that's a different category.

Hey wait, I don't even have an Astron branded VC. I do have the one Saturn cover on my '71 though.

Nate,

Mission accomplished. I scared up a rocker cover to trade.
mitsuman wrote:...I expect the only difference to be the vacuum nipple...
This turned out to be the case. The 1976 nipple is straight, 1977 is an elbow.
I'm sacrificing my 1977 for this trade if that's OK.

Today I learned from you that the "Saturn" moniker on the rocker cover
is sometimes mistakenly interpreted as the manufacturer of the engine.
I had never considered that connotation of "Saturn".

You have me lost on vaccum nipple being on the Valve cover. At least its not on my engine. Its in a large piece that sticks between the engine and gasket inside the head?

Is your from a chain drive? Cause that is what I have to have.

The black one is boxed up and ready to go, just don't want either of us wasting money on something that wont fit...

On a chain motor the only hose nipple was out the center of the rear hold down bolt. There were no nipples through the casting.

I did not realize how much the chain rocker cover changed over the years.
Here's the diagram from the 1971-73 parts manual:

http://pl1746.pairlitesite.com/parts/MD ... -cover.JPG
MD004512_71-K-rocker-cover.JPG

Big changes started in 1976:

http://pl1746.pairlitesite.com/parts/MD ... -cover.JPG
MD005326_76-K-rocker-cover.JPG

The oil filler cap moved rearward, the location of the air filter housing studs changed substantially, and a press-in vacuum nipple was added.
I'd post a pic of my 1977 cover if you want, but the parts catalog diagram renders the cover faithfully.

These differences may be a deal-breaker for you. At a minimum, you'd have to re-work the air filter housing attachment somehow.
The gasket is the same for all variants of chain-drive so at least the mating surfaces are the same,
but this no longer looks like the no-mods one-for-one swap you were hoping for.

Yup. That port will be blocked anyway, and those studs won't make a difference. Mi e is boxed up but in the wrong car (drove the Montero today) I will get it out tomorrow!

Nathan,

If you want to hold off shipping your Saturn cover until you receive mine and confirm whether or not it will work for you, that would be fine.
I'll get mine in the mail Thursday afternoon.

It dawned on me last night (when I woke up for no reason) that you will need the bolt with port on it. I'll run home and try to find it after work today, if I find it in time I'll send it out today.

Thanks!

I don't normally run that vented bolt. These engines vent well through the front hose. Keep in mind these are one of the last production engines with no PCV system.

The celestial gods have sent me a ceremonial capsule from the orb of Saturn.
It's beautiful!
Thanks, Nathan. I'm happy with my end of the deal.

I hope the heater control valve does what you want.
Have you considered bypassing the valve entirely, running unthrottled coolant through the heater core all the time?
I've run several cars that way with no significant detriment to cabin air.
In the models that I run, heat is better modulated by the blower than by fluid flow.
In the winter you want full heat anyway and in the summer that baby radiator hardly stands out against the thermal background.
